A dissertation is an advanced, extended piece of independent research on a topic that arises out of one or more your final year optional courses. Even if you are only doing a single subject (ie. English) you usually have two courses running in parallel. With Joint subjects, you will usually be doing one course in each subject. You are not expected to combine two totally different disciplines.
